My Experience

Although I am not currently a department director at WMUA, I was lucky enough to work as News Editor during my sophomore year. This position was especially valuable because it allowed me to take on many of the responsibilities of a General Manager within a smaller section of the station.

As News Editor, I worked alongside current Programmer Olivia to recruit and train new members, hold biweekly meetings, run our Instagram page, plan events, revamp the music blog Off the Airwaves, and encourage newsies to attend local music events to create their own journalistic content. I spent three days a week running the broadcasts and was able to spend a lot of time in the station, becoming close with other department directors and getting a strong feel for how the station runs on a daily basis.

Observing the creativity and hard work of other directors, as well as the collaboration between departments, inspired me to suggest changes in the news department and eventually start my own initiative through the zine committee.

Why I Joined WMUA

  • Local arts and music scenes.
  • Following in my dad’s footsteps.
  • Gaining more journalism experience.
  • Making new friends and forming a community.

Overall, I believe the role of WMUA is to create a community for students passionate about music to bring their creative ideas to life, whether that be through hosting a show, becoming a sports broadcaster, helping create PSAs, planning events, or any other activities the station currently offers.

By improving our social media presence, expanding events and station activities, making changes to General Body meetings, and increasing interaction with our physical music library, I hope to give members of WMUA a more active role in improving and expanding our radio station.
